CINEMA JENIN in Competition at 24th IDFA Amsterdam

We are very happy to announce, that Marcus Vetter's documentary CINEMA JENIN will be celebrating...

Feature Length Competition - World Premiere

CINEMA JENIN follows an ambitious initiative to re-open a previously abandoned cinema in the West Bank city of Jenin. Founded in the 1960s, it was once the largest cinema in the Palestinian territories, today it stands as a hollow echo of its society. Re-building the cinema, Germans and Palestinians come together evoking often comedic but always political and cultural ramifications. Cinema Jenin witnesses an intimate, nuanced and textured view into the city and its domestic affairs as well as the journey of a dedicated, loyal, often conflicted group of people who hope that the re-building of the cinema will be a bridge to peace, education and Palestinian self-empowerment.

JENIN, West Bank — Juliano Mer Khamis lived a paradox. The internationally renowned actor, director and political activist, who was killed here this week, was both an Israeli and a Palestinian, born to a Jewish mother and an Arab Christian father in the Israeli Arab town of Nazareth.

Mr. Mer Khamis embodied the Israeli-Arab conflict and embraced its complexities in a way that few could. He was regarded as an Arab by many Israelis, and by some in this West Bank city, his adopted home, first and foremost as a Jew. (read more)

Arij Ayaseh, a 21 old young woman actor said that the death of Mr. Mer Khamis means a “lost dream,” adding: “We will not find another like him, but we will continue in his path.”

TO FIGHT FOR | THE YEAR OF DECISION (Cinema/TV/DVD)

TO FIGHT FOR by Gerardo Milsztein is an inspiring documentary on one of the greatest challenges of our time: the transformation of destructive power into creative energy, self-loathing into self-confidence, and repression of the past into hope for the future.

Directly and with no holds barred, the film tells the story of five young men aged between 16 and 20 who steal, smoke dope and enjoy getting into fights. They are directionless and willing to resort to violence. Now they face the biggest challenge of their young lives: Will they end up in jail, or tear down the old walls and take control, rebuilding trust and closeness after years of aggression and isolation?
The “year of decision“ is their final chance to break the vicious cycle and come to terms with reality.

A stirring cinema experience, that blows the mind and offers a radically different approach to the current debate about youth violence.

CINEMA FOR PEACE 2011 (Nominated „Most Valuable Documentary of the Year”)
Winner German Cinematography Award 2010

PLEASE WATCH THE TRAILER HERE!
